I have used Dropbox for a long while to be able to share files on diferent devices and have them always accessible. Recently, I discovered an alternative that actually works better for me for a couple reasons I will explain. This alternative is SugarSync.
Why SugarSync? Well, first of all it gives you 5Gb of free storage from the beginning on their free plan (compared to the 2Gb of dropbox). But more relevant to my decision is that you can share any folder in your computer in SugarSync without the need to work inside the SugarSync folder. In Dropbox, you need to drop files to the dropbox folder making it sometimes not useful if you have a very well organized system of folders to organize your files.
Why is Dropbox more popular than SugarSync? I have no clue. So if you are interested in trying it, go to this link. For me it is the best option I know so far for this sort of file sharing.

When I have a need, I spend some time to compare the different solutions on the market. This was the case for Dropbox and SugarSync. I currently use SugarSync intensively because their functions are, in general, much better.
ReplyDeleteFor example, allows you to synchronize several folders at the same time and between different computers, this is very practical when it is used as a temporary backup or collavoration tool. With Dropbox you must move your work to the shared folder. This break CAD orgatization workflows. SugarSync, instead, adapts to you file structure.
Does sugarsync have problems with xrefs?
ReplyDeleteI know I can't rely on my xrefs when my files are saved to dropbox folders.
@dpearson , it respects Xref structure because you do not need to move your files anywhere. You simply select the folder you want to sync right click it and you choose "SugarSync > Share Folder"
ReplyDeleteThe only consideration is that you can't do that for Network Drives folders, so for a company environment might not be 100% reliable but for personal use is perfect
